In light of my posts yesterday on natural law, my brother Fat Wally Smith, sent me this article which cites George Washington’s thoughts on what virtues are indispensable to a free, self- governing people. Fat Wally also reminded me that when our father was a student at the University of Virginia Law School, natural law was not only acknowledged, but it was taught. When FW and I were in law school, such a thought was heretical to an increasingly leftist faculty. What is natural law? Virtually everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. In countless incidents, there is a right course of action and a wrong one. We might not always choose the right course, but we know the difference ( btw, this is what guilt is). All law has to be based on a recognized and accepted authority. You can’t see natural law. It is not chiseled in marble on the frieze of a Greco-Roman building, yet, it exists in a ubiquitous fashion in every corner of the globe and in virtually every human heart. Where does this law of basic right and wrong come from? It has to emanate from a source. There ain’t but one place….. and George Washington knew way back then that when our leaders turned their backs on real “truth,” the great American experiment would be doomed.
