Since FB is generally my source for hearing about folks who have died, I wanted to get the word out to all those around the Old Dominion that my cousin Judge passed away yesterday.
The most direct and succinct message I can convey about Judge that encapsulates his personality is that “he was really a good guy.” My guess is that whenever anyone ever asked another if they knew Judge, the recipient always answered: “yes, he’s a really good guy.”
“Yes, he’s a really good guy” was undoubtedly stated thousands of times in reference to Judge over the course of his earthly time with us. I assume the good Lord called Judge up to the Big Leagues because he needed a good role model to help manage all the Double and Triple A young rookies slipping through the Pearly Gates.
Obits/eulogies are not the place for public policy opinions, so I will just say, I want to celebrate the life of my cousin in a church yard with all my other cousins, Judge’s brothers, family and friends. I want to give him the honor he deserves now. I love all my cousins and although it seems as though we go to more funerals now than weddings, despite the venue, it restores and energizes my undeserving soul to see all my crazy, eccentric relatives ( and I have a lot of em)!
Judge had lung cancer. About a week ago, and unexpectantly, he took a turn for the worse. My understanding is Judge took the news of his sickness “like a man,” with great grace, peace and dignity. I guess when one spends his whole life being “a really good guy,” that person is sure and accepting of his final destination.
A great American, a patriot, a veteran, husband, father, friend and “really good guy,” Douglas Mitchell Smith passed into the arms of his eternal maker on August 30th, 2020……
