Judge Spruill

Judge Spruill was an all around, All American, All Star, Super-Stud, Strappin Hoss. He had a booming Foghorn Leghorn voice with many colloquial and folksy sayings. He was charming, courtly, witty and warm. Behind those bright, steely eyes, was an engaging intellectual mind, a palpable force that filled the room. While the Judge was always self-effacing and poked fun at himself, he was extremely cultured and learned. He was always at the ready to discuss any topic from the Battle of Hastings to ACC basketball. He was kind and helpful to me my whole life and he and Cora Sue could not have been better friends to my family. Judge Spruill had the good sense to marry his equal, for Cora Sue possesses so many of the qualities that made Joe, Joe. Finally, the boys! Even though Jay, Leigh and Bill made the awful mistake of attending the University of North Carolina, one could not ask for better friends. More than just “running around misbehaving friends” (although exemplary at these activities), but guys of real substance and great values. Judge Spruill was my moral compass. He was always what I thought the model of what a man should be. Judge, thanks for sharing your many gifts with all of us.
