My Boy at 29

Share

Today is my boy’s birthday. As is my custom (see below), no happy birthday expression is complete without a story! So it’s Super Bowl 2008, Coleman Smith is a Sr. in high school.  A few people are by the house, including Coleman’s good buddy Adam. After the game, Coleman asks me if it is ok if he and Adam go out for awhile. I very calmly, say “no, son, you are drunk.” Coleman is standing up and shortly after my decree, Coleman begins urinating on himself, saturating his left leg with “barely processed” cheap beer. Coleman says “Dad, I’m not drunk!” I point to his left leg and say “Coleman, you just pissed all over yourself!” Coleman looks down, assesses the veracity of my statement, shrugs his shoulders and  smiles. He then says ” yeah, I guess you’re right” and kind of chuckles. Call me a bad parent, but this story is actually endearing to me, because it encapsulates Coleman’s personality and our relationship. He is a fun guy, but he is also a really good guy. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, can laugh at himself and is extremely comfortable and secure in his own skin. About every 3 months, especially when I am missing my boy, I will text him and say ” remember that time you pissed on yourself?’ and we will get a chuckle…….
