My Mother Kitty Smith

APRIL 9, 2020

My mother while a student at Parsons School of Design in NYC. She would be 94 today. She was a very cultured and learned woman. I remember her being able to name all the Roman emperors and discourse about their reigns. She tried to introduce her 4 hayseed sons to music, art , travel and great works of literature, but we were too busy boozing, chasing cheap women and breaking things. As Merle Haggard said ” Mama Tried.”

After the War, when Pop was in law school, Virginia let a few women attend classes in the College of Arts and Sciences ( I don’t know why, seems pretty heretical to me). Nevertheless, she smoked all her classes and screwed up the curve for all the fellows who were doing their duty by boozing, chasing cheap women and breaking things. It did not endear her to her classmates. She knew nothing about sports and couldn’t understand why we wanted to dribble basketballs through the house. Oh by the way Mom, that Ming Vase thing that mysteriously broke: behind the back pass to Fat Wally who wasn’t looking! Happy Birthday Kitty. Oh, and if the boys up in heaven are having a bit of fun, let them!
